With our prior work on the High Line and at Skylight West, we had a unique vantage point into how Manhattan’s West Side was changing. Before Manhattan West and Hudson Yards, prior to phase 2 of the High Line, the neighborhood west of 10th Avenue felt exciting and undiscovered.

With the ongoing Chelsea art gallery westward expansion, Skylight’s client demand for polished industrial space in West Chelsea was growing. We identified a prime “blank canvas” raw concrete space in the heart of the district to become Skylight’s first modern event space, and longest-running venue, Skylight Modern.

"We built a reputation on converting the city’s industrial past into high-end venues – we had a former parking garage, the High Line, a former bank in Brooklyn and a historic post office under our belts, but we were excited to build something new and more turnkey to offer a different type of space to our clients which included rigging points, in-house lighting capabilities, elevators, etc.
Moreover, it gave us the chance to exercise our architectural working with James Ramsey of RAAD as our architect. He is the founder of the amazing Lowline project on the Lower East Side. He worked with us to create subtle details that will best showcase our clients’ work."

Skylight’s decade on 27th Street was part of the neighborhood’s evolution from a gritty, disjointed west side to a cohesive canvas for entertainment, arts and culture. Our decision to close the doors at Skylight Modern enables us to turn our focus north and drive continued transformational placemaking to Midtown.
